Eureka

Type:
Bitmap graphics/Music/Sound Written 1984 by Ian Livingstone [story], Donát Kiss and András Császár.
Runs on:
Notes: Divided into five parts (prehistory, roman, medieval, world war II and the present). Since each part was set in a different time, it did not matter which one you played first, although the game wouldn't let you play the fifth part until you had the passwords from solving the other four parts (Prehistory, the sound of a dinosaur: meep meep; Roman, who burned Rome: Nero; Medieval, Who killed Arthur: Mordred; World War II, the name of a record: Anvil Chorus).

If you managed to solve it all and could figure out the hidden telephone number to call and the first person to do so before 1985-12-31 would win Ł25.000. If no-one managed to solve the game before then, the money would be distributed among the participating players. The game was solved by 15-year-old Mathew Woodley from the UK 4-5 months before the deadline. A book of maps and hints (written by Ian Livingstone and Mathew Woodley) was published a while after the game was first solved. There was no save command, certain rooms had time limits, there were fighting sequences where you could lose stamina and the game was notorious for killing you. Each part was preceded by an abysmal arcade game in which you could win extra stamina points for the adventure. However, all puzzles in the game are solvable without losing any stamina.
